    I remember when the Birds Directive (1979) was incorporated into British Law: it was a remarkable piece of legislation in that it said ‘economics are not a valid reason to destroy or degrade a habitat or its species’. Needless to say Margaret Thatcher undid that by inserting a clause into the later Habitats Directive (1983) that said ‘economics ARE a valid reason to destroy habitats and species’. QED. Mike
